After yet another lovely greasy breakfast enjoyed in this cozy little diner, I figured it was time to tell the world about the wonderful home cooked food available here. Located on the corner of Richmond and George street, in the heart of downtown Toronto, this crimson red building cannot be missed. You definitely need to approach this place with an open mind since its decor does not do it justice. Despite the revamp on the outside, the interior has barely been altered in what seems like too long. Regardless, the yummy food and generally wonderful service will definitely change your outlook on this place.
Breakfasts usually run about 15$ with an unlimited supply of freshly brewed coffee. They vary from very greasy and filling Irish and Canadian breakfasts including beans, home fries, bacon, eggs and toast to light “healthier” alternatives like fruit salads and omelettes. Either way, the eggs are always perfectly cooked, the plates always look appetizing and arrive only after a very short wait. As for lunch, there’s always specials of soups and sandwiches and tarts or quiches ontop of their regular menu. Regardless of all that, I recommend going for the GSD burger. Made in house and once again cooked to perfection, this burger will impress any connoisseur especially being resonably priced at around $10 and served with a heaping pile of home made fries.
One thing I have to complain about at GSD is the service once the place fills up. The waitresses tend to “forget” about tables and orders if there’s too much going on in the kitchen. Had one misfortunate incident when we were waiting for over 45 minutes since the cook was taking care of take-out orders instead of the diners in his restaurant. Either way, we’ve become fairly regular customers and the fact that the staff has begun recognizing us makes us feel right at home everytime.
